Rikitikitavi – Kampot – Restaurant Review
Sun 18 Jul 2010
Rikitikitavi seems to have a good reputation as not only a guesthouse, but for their restaurant as well. With its open-air second floor location on the river, the restaurant certainly has a great view, especially for sunset drinking and dining.

Kampot Pepper Grilled Chicken Sandwich
The menu runs from international dishes to local Khmer favorites. There are also usually several specials on the blackboard near the entrance. I ate at the restaurant twice during my stay in Kampot. The first time was for lunch, just after checking in from the long bumpy ride from Phnom Penh. I selected the grilled chicken sandwich. The chicken breast was coated in Kampot pepper and served on a rosemary coated ciabatta roll. Mayonnaise was on the side, which I’m sure many people would appreciate. The sandwich was accompanied with a nice small salad, a refreshing change from the usual chips or fries.

Loc Lac – Stir-fried beef with brown sauce.
I decided to eat dinner at Rikitikitavi on my last night staying there. For this meal, I finally got around to trying a famous Cambodian dish: loc lac. This is one of those dishes that comes in an infinite variety, but the basics are usually beef, stir-fried, with a sweet-ish brown sauce. Supposedly, the dish is "traditionally" served with French fries, but it seems that any old starch will do. Rikitikitavi’s version was served with rice and small pita breads. The beef (Australian) was tender and delicious. I’ll probably try some other versions of the dish when I go back to Cambodia next month.
Rikitikitavi definitely deserves its reputation as a good place to eat, both for the food and the view. The restaurant is near the south end of Kampot’s river-side promenade. It’s open every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant is quite small, with just three tables and a counter to sit at for meals, so I imagine it can fill up in the high season. See the Rikitikitavi web site for more information.

Thank you so much for the lovely write up, we are delighted that you enjoyed your time at Rikitikitavi, and hope to welcome you again when you are next in town.
One tiny correction would be regarding the number of tables available. We have 2 large picnic tables on the upstairs terrace, and 5 further tables in the covered restaurant. There are two further palces to eat upstairs, including the bar. Downstairs we currently have two further picnc tables, but we only really use these during the morning. We are planning to place more comfortable seating on the riverside pavement during the coming months in time for the high season.
Thank you again for your lovely report on Rikitikitavi,
Dom

Thanks Dom, there’s more to come when I write up the guest house for the main guide to Kampot. I neglected to mention the ground floor area, which I’m sure could hold more people as well. During my stay, it looked a bit more like a garage but I assumed that was temporary. Dining on the riverside promenade sounds quite nice. I hope there’s people there in the cool season to enjoy it.

Thanks Michael, we will get the pavement area fully tiled and furnished for November when it (hopefully!) gets to the high season here, though we do have two substantial picnic tables on the frontage already. The area under our restaurant with the motos parked will remain a parking spot, as it is all we have for secure parking, sadly. Look forward to meetin you when you are next in Kampot. dom
