Following my recently established tradition, here’s a couple of photos from today’s explorations. I’ve traveled to Buriram province to see a couple of very interesting temples, one of which is possibly Thailand’s most impressive Angkor era structure.

Phnom Rung
The central sanctuary at Phnom Rung

Sitting atop an ancient volcano, Prasat Phnom Rung already has location going for it. You have to climb a few stairs (not that many, compared to some temples) to get to the eleventh century temple, which is in really good shape. Best of all, unlike Angkor these days, you might well have the whole place to yourself.

Muang Tom
The central sanctuary of Muang Tam

Muang Tam (or Muang Tom) is a short distance from the base of Phnom Rung, on the shore of a kilometer long baray built by the Khmer. It was built around the same time as Phnom Rung, and although it’s much smaller, it has a certain charm and elegance that makes it well worth a visit.

I’ll have a full travel guide, as well as another ‘how-to’ post for you when I get back home to Bangkok in a few days.
