In times like these, even people that can afford to travel are having second thoughts. Is it right, when so many other people can’t afford it? That’s really a question each person has to answer for themselves, but consider for a moment all those people in places like Thailand, whose own jobs depend on tourists and travelers. You might also consider how you can make an even greater difference in the places you visit by donating to local charities, or even volunteering some of your time. Many people have found that spending time at a hospital, orphanage or animal rescue center while on vacation has affected their lives in ways no other vacation ever has.

I’ve been collecting information on various volunteer opportunities around Southeast Asia, and will begin posting them here as I get them checked out. Today’s first highlight is Angkor Hospital for Children. The Siem Reap hospital is independently operated, and funded primarily by New York based Friends Without a Border. The hospital recently opened a satellite branch in a more remote village away from the bustle of Siem Reap to serve the needs of the rural poor, which are still abundant in Cambodia.

You can of course simply make a cash donation through Friends Without a Border to help fund the hospital’s operation. But, you can have a much more meaningful experience by volunteering your time at the hospital. There are opportunities for non-medical people as well as medical professionals. You can also make arrangements to donate supplies.
