In Thai, sanuk simply means "fun" or "having fun", but as with so many things about Thai culture, it’s a bit more complicated than that. It can also mean "enjoyable" and anything that’s not sanuk is generally avoided. In Search of Sanuk is a Bangkok-based organization seeking to make helping the poor and underprivileged around Bangkok "fun". "ISOS" – as it calls itself – targets foreigners in Thailand who are interested in charitable work, but may not be sure how to get involved. They work in partnership with Thais and Thai NGOs and charities, thriving on the Thai cultural value of sanuk. "When we provide outlets for participants to experience sanuk for a good cause we not only enhance one’s experience of Thailand, but propagate better global citizenship."

For more information about getting involved with ISOS, see their web site or follow them on Twitter.
