Thai Banks to Start Charging for ATM Use
Thu 9 Apr 2009
In recent years, it seems that a lot of people have started using ATM withdraws to get local currency in places like Thailand. If your home bank didn’t charge a high fee for such transactions, it really was the most convenient way to get cash. However, those coming to Thailand after April 17th will wish to note that almost all Thai banks will start charging a fee on foreign ATM card usage beginning on that date. The fee agreed by the banks belonging to the Thai "ATM Pool" is 150 Baht – or about US$4. See my currency converter to check this amount in your currency.
Note that this fee is charged by the bank that owns the ATM machine, so it applies even if your bank advertises "no fee" for ATM usage. Some banks have a policy of reimbursing you for ATM charges incurred by other banks, but check whether or not this applies to international transactions before using your card, if you want to avoid big surprises when you get home.
