A few notes on Bali hotel happenings:

I was a bit shocked to see a pile of ruble where the Resor Seminyak used to be when I was in Bali last week. The sprawling old hotel used to be the only budget-priced option on the beach in Seminyak. Now, apparently, it’s been torn down to be replaced by a smart new "boutique" (read: expensive) property. The new resort is scheduled to open in October 2010, but the way things go in Indonesia, I wouldn’t recommend booking a room before 2011. On this last trip, I stayed a second time at Putu Bali Villas, which is probably now your best bet for a budget priced option in Seminyak.

And, speaking of hotel openings, Best Western has opened its first affiliate in Bali, or has it? According to the Bali Discovery web site, the new 110 room property doesn’t actually have any operating permits, because it somehow got built in an area designated a "no hotel" zone, without anyone noticing, or issuing the supposedly necessary building permits. Local authorities have apparently verified that the hotel is operating, receiving guests and bookings, even though it doesn’t have the required permits.
