Over the years, the Thai Silk Company founded by Jim Thompson has evolved from a "simple" purveyor of fine silk garments into a complete lifestyle brand, encompassing everything needed to turn you and your home into the very epitome of Thai style. That style also includes distinctive Thai food as well, with the establishment of a small chain of restaurants under the Jim Thompson brand.

Saladaeng Cafe was one of the first restaurants opened by the company, and to date it’s the only one that isn’t part of a Jim Thompson shop. The casual café is very close to Bangkok’s central business district, making it a handy place for lunch or business dinner.

The menu at Saladaeng Cafe is mostly Thai, although there are a few western dishes to choose from as well. There are individual dishes as well as main courses that can be shared among several people. The menu also has a good selection of drinks, with fruit juices, smoothies and other items to choose from.

A favorite of mine from the menu, when I’m on my own, is the stir-fried pork (or chicken) with holy basil, garlic and chili. This Thai dish is widely available and can be found in many varieties. At Saladaeng Cafe, it comes full of flavor and very spicy, although the chili doesn’t completely over-power the dish, which is a mistake some cooks make. In my opinion, the Thai food at Saladaeng Cafe is more ‘authentic’ than you’ll find at many other Thai restaurants in Bangkok that cater to tourists. It hasn’t been ‘dumbed down’ for western tastes.

Expect to pay around 300 Baht per person for a meal at Saladaeng Cafe. See the Saladaeng Cafe web site for a map and more information.
